Fishermen’s Foundation Rooted in Vision of Early Leaders
Some 50 years ago, as the rugged fishing village of Marathon began expanding quickly, it became apparent that the Middle Keys needed local, dependable health care for area residents and visitors. The growing population was overwhelming the volunteer ambulance service and private pilots who transported accident victims or pregnant women about to give birth to hospitals in Miami or Key West.
Visionary local leaders, rising to the occasion, recognized that the area needed its own hospital. In 1959, Phil Sadowski began raising funds for a community hospital. In March 1961 ground was broken and in 1962 Fishermen’s Hospital admitted its first patient.
For the next 25 years, Fishermen’s Hospital operated as a nonprofit organization until 1986. Then, in need of capital for modernization, the hospital was leased to Health Management Associates as a for profit institution.
In July 2011, Fishermen’s Hospital came full circle and returned to a non-profit, community-owned status. Today, Fishermen’s Community Hospital is a thriving 25-bed Critical Access non-profit hospital located the Middle Keys community of Marathon. It offers a state-of-the art emergency department, a full array of diagnostic and laboratory services, an intensive care unit, inpatient and outpatient surgery, physical and occupational therapy, pharmacy, 24-hour cardiac coverage and other essential services.
The future of Fishermen’s Community Hospital is bright. A half century after its founding, the hospital again is looking for visionary leaders ready to rise to the occasion. As budgets tighten, the value of philanthropy and the work of the Foundation has become even more pivotal in the future success of Fishermen’s Community Hospital.
The Foundation’s Objective is to build long-lasting relationships with philanthropic leaders that honor their interests and commitments as we enhance the capabilities of the hospital. Fishermen’s Hospital Foundation’s core purpose is to cultivate broad community support for the good health and well-being of the community. The Foundation plays a critical role in raising resources and community awareness for the Hospital as well as funding for equipment and services that would otherwise not be possible for a non- profit hospital.
Funding support comes from many facets within the community. Business donations, fundraising events, volunteerism and individual donations all play a large role in maintaining the level of excellence associated with Fishermen’s Community Hospital. By supporting Fishermen’s Hospital Foundation you are helping make a difference in the lives of those needing care within our community and beyond. Better hospital funding means the Middle Keys can offer more complete and higher quality services. A contribution to Fishermen’s Hospital Foundation is an investment in your community, making it a better place for all of us to live.
